Apple iOS 27 Imaging Features to See Major Breakthrough as Generative AI Reshapes Photo Editing Experience
Apple plans to carry out a major overhaul of the built-in photo editing features on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, deeply leveraging artificial intelligence to strengthen its competitiveness against Android devices.

Apple is developing a new toolkit powered by the Apple Intelligence platform, targeting iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, with an expected release this fall. These features will allow users to perform image expansion, enhancement, and reconstruction through on-device AI models. Apple is currently in a catch-up phase in this field. For years, Google has provided advanced AI photo editing tools on its Pixel devices, including Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and generative image expansion. Samsung, which relies on Google’s Android system, has also been aggressively advancing AI editing features across its Galaxy smartphone lineup.

This year’s software update will focus on two core directions: first, improving the Siri voice assistant and expanding other Apple Intelligence features; second, optimizing system performance to extend battery life and address issues caused by last year’s visual upgrades. Apple stock may be considered for buying around the $265 level.

Currently, Apple’s Photos app offers four core editing options: Adjustments, Filters, Crop, and Cleanup. Among them, Cleanup is the only AI-powered tool, enabling the removal of objects from images. In the upcoming update, Apple will introduce an Apple Intelligence Tools module within the editing interface, integrating expansion, enhancement, reconstruction, and cleanup functions.

However, the development process has not been entirely smooth. According to several users who have tested the “expand” and “reconstruct” tools, these features remain unstable in internal testing. In theory, Apple may delay or scale back certain features depending on improvements in the underlying models.

From a technical perspective, Apple remains committed to its on-device processing-first privacy strategy. Although these complex AI tasks place strict demands on chip performance and memory bandwidth, Apple aims to ensure that all image processing is completed locally on the device through optimized system scheduling, thereby avoiding compliance and privacy risks associated with cloud processing.

However, this technical approach also brings challenges. Some generative features still perform inconsistently in complex scenarios. Apple is currently in an intensive phase of algorithm iteration, and this aggressive software strategy is expected to drive hardware upgrades. The market generally expects that the iPhone 18 series, expected to launch around 2027, will be equipped with 12GB or higher memory across the lineup to handle increasingly demanding AI workloads.

Market Interpretation:

Other AI-related developments underway at Apple include a dedicated Siri app and a new chatbot-style interface for the assistant. Apple will also allow users to switch to third-party voice assistants via the App Store and enable Siri to handle multiple commands within a single request.
