Private key definition

A private key is a secret number that proves ownership of cryptocurrency and authorises its movement on a blockchain. It produces the digital signature that the network checks before it will accept a transaction from your address.

When you spend crypto, your wallet uses the private key to sign the transaction; the network then verifies that signature against your address and, if it matches, records the transfer. The key itself is never meant to be shared, because anyone who has it can sign transactions as if they were you.

A public key is the counterpart: it is derived from the private key, can be shared freely, and is used to receive funds and check signatures, not to authorise spending. The relationship is one-way, so the public key can be calculated from the private key but not the reverse. Whoever holds the private key controls the funds, full stop.

You want to send 0.5 units of crypto from your wallet.

Your wallet signs the transaction with your private key, and the network verifies it:

If someone else copied that private key, they could sign their own transaction and move all your funds without needing anything else, which is why the key stays secret.
