Given definition

Given is a dealer term for a trade completed when a seller accepts the buyer's bid price. It means the instrument was sold at the bid rather than bought at the offer.

The term belongs to dealer and over-the-counter markets, including interbank forex, bonds, and swaps. A dealer says a price was given when a seller hits the bid and the deal prints at that level.

Given is the opposite of paid, which is used when a buyer lifts the offer. Repeated givens at lower bids point to selling pressure, while repeated paids at higher offers point to buying pressure.

Given Example

EUR/USD is quoted with a bid of 1.0850 and an ask of 1.0852.

You sell EUR/USD at 1.0850, accepting the bid.

The market is described as given at 1.0850, because the seller took the bid price. If EUR/USD is given again at lower bids, a dealer may read it as selling pressure in the pair.
