Headquartered in Shenzhen, China, TME was founded on June 6, 2012, as a subsidiary of Tencent Holdings, which remains its majority shareholder. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 2018, raising over US$1.1 billion in its initial public offering (IPO). Unlike Spotify and other global streaming platforms, Tencent Music operates on a freemium model. Users can listen to music for free with ads or pay for premium subscriptions that offer ad-free listening, higher sound quality, and exclusive content. The company also generates revenue through virtual gifting, karaoke services, and live-streamed concerts, making it a diversified digital entertainment platform.
