Amazon Launches Supply Chain Service, Creating a Long-Term Threat to the Transportation Industry!
Amazon has officially launched Amazon Supply Chain, an asset-based fourth-party logistics solution!

Amazon has officially launched Amazon Supply Chain, an asset-based fourth-party logistics solution. The service combines Amazon’s years of accumulated logistics infrastructure with an automated decision-making system layered on top.

Amazon’s existing logistics assets include more than 80,000 trailers, over 24,000 containers, and more than 100 aircraft. The new service integrates third-party ocean freight, air freight, and less-than-truckload shipping with Amazon’s own warehousing, fulfillment, and last-mile delivery capabilities, while promoting its excess transportation capacity externally as a selling point.

For shippers that choose to participate and authorize Amazon’s automated replenishment and inventory management decisions, Amazon will offer discounted pricing across existing services, including Amazon Global Logistics, Seller Export and Delivery, and Amazon Warehousing and Distribution. Amazon stock may be considered for buying around the $257 level.

UPS and FedEx are facing the most visible market pressure. UPS shares have already underperformed the S&P 500 by approximately 17.4%. Bernstein stated that the definition of supply chain services itself is extremely broad, and any logistics-related move by Amazon naturally creates market anxiety. The market is interpreting this announcement as having potentially broad and deeply disruptive implications.

Notably, the launch identified Procter & Gamble and 3M as early customers. This detail has particularly unsettled the market because both companies operate far beyond Amazon’s traditional e-commerce ecosystem.

Truck transportation companies across both full-truckload and less-than-truckload segments, as well as freight forwarder Expeditors International, all declined, reflecting market concerns that Amazon is opening its logistics network fully to external shippers.

Bernstein believes that large enterprise shippers are unlikely to favor this bundled service model because of the enormous scale of their budgets and the highly customized nature of their supply chain requirements. In many cases, bundled solutions may ultimately prove more expensive than independently designed supply chain systems. Amazon also occupies the dual role of infrastructure owner and purchaser of logistics services itself, meaning any shipper handing over logistics control faces potential agency risks.

Market Interpretation:

Analysts distinguish Amazon’s logistics expansion strategy from Amazon Web Services. Expanding data centers and expanding logistics networks are fundamentally different businesses. Logistics operations are far less standardized, and transportation capacity is far from instantly scalable.

Among transportation subsectors, Bernstein believes less-than-truckload transportation has greater resilience than full-truckload shipping, while rail transportation faces the least impact.

The sector viewed as having the greatest valuation mismatch is intermodal transportation, followed closely by freight forwarding companies.

Amazon itself is viewed as outperforming the S&P 500 by approximately 12.2%.
