The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Tuesday that Zoox, Amazon’s autonomous driving subsidiary is recalling 332 vehicles in the United States due to errors in its automated driving system (ADS) software.
According to NHTSA, the recall affects certain ADS-equipped vehicles running software versions released before December 19. When these vehicles approach or are positioned at intersections, they may cross over the yellow centerline and move into or stop in front of oncoming traffic, significantly increasing the risk of a collision.
The agency added that Zoox has already provided a free ADS software update for the affected vehicles. Back in May this year, the company initiated a previous recall involving 270 vehicles. That same month, an incident occurred in San Francisco linked to the system. Zoox subsequently rolled out a software update aimed at improving pedestrian tracking around the vehicle and ensuring the vehicle remains stationary when someone is nearby.
In August this year, NHTSA formally approved Zoox’s vehicles for demonstration operations and closed the investigation it had launched in 2022 into whether the vehicles met relevant federal requirements.
At the same time, Amazon continues to expand its commerce and technology footprint. The platform recently announced its first “Super Saturday” sales event scheduled to launch on December 20. The campaign targets the final pre-Christmas shopping rush with steep discounts across categories such as fashion, beauty, home, and tech products, encouraging consumers to seize the last window for gift purchases.
