Digital wallet definition

A digital wallet is a software or hardware tool that stores the private keys giving you access to cryptocurrency on a blockchain. The wallet does not hold the coins themselves; it holds the keys that prove ownership and let you move the assets.

Digital wallets are either hot or cold. A hot wallet stays connected to the internet and suits frequent transactions. A cold wallet stays offline and suits longer-term storage and tighter security.

Whoever holds the private key controls the funds. Lose the key or the recovery phrase and you lose access to the wallet permanently, with no reset and no support line to restore it. Traders and investors use a digital wallet to send, receive, store, and interact with crypto assets.

Digital wallet Example

You buy Bitcoin on a crypto exchange and transfer it to your own digital wallet.

The wallet stores the private keys that let you access and control that Bitcoin on the blockchain. Hold the keys yourself and you control the coins; lose the recovery phrase and the Bitcoin is stranded on-chain with no way back in.
