【TMGM Financial Recap】Investors Assess Staying Power of Gold’s Rally Towards $4,200 Ahead of Nonfarm Payrolls!

This week’s rebound in gold exceeded $200 on Thursday, when prices reached their highest level in more than two weeks. Several factors underpinned the advance, with cautious optimism taking the place of pessimism. Ahead of the US October nonfarm payrolls report scheduled for later on Friday, spot gold remained confined to a narrow trading range.

A weaker dollar, coupled with falling US Treasury yields, has provided the rally’s most immediate support. With the US Dollar Index close to its lowest level since 30 September, investors holding other currencies faced a lower cost for dollar-denominated gold. Holding gold, which pays no yield, also became significantly less costly in opportunity terms as the 10-year US Treasury yield dropped to a near two-month low.

Further interest rate rises remain part of market expectations, but lower energy prices have reduced concerns about inflation and may limit the need for additional increases. That small adjustment in expectations has afforded gold some short-term respite. The plunge in oil prices on Wednesday added weight to the view that inflationary pressures might ease for a time.

Federal Reserve officials delivered fresh comments as gold advanced. A gradual pace of rate increases received public backing on Thursday from the presidents of both the Cleveland and Richmond Federal Reserve Banks. In their view, bringing inflation back to the 2% target in a timely manner requires monetary policy to become restrictive. They nevertheless favoured smaller adjustments at more frequent intervals to minimise disruption to households, businesses and financial markets.

Underlying these moves was the result of the US midterm elections. The Democrats’ return to control of Congress prompted a rapid revision of market expectations concerning Iran and the outlook for investment in artificial intelligence. Expectations that this political shift could lessen the risk of further escalation in the US–Iran conflict accounted for much of Wednesday’s sharp decline in oil prices. By Thursday, however, a rebound in oil suggested somewhat less optimism about a swift end to the war.

Heavy losses also hit technology stocks, with AI-related sectors among the worst affected. The Nasdaq’s sharp retreat came as investors worried that opposition at local level and more stringent approval procedures could hold back data centre construction. Such delays could affect capital expenditure and the momentum of economic growth over the next year or two.

Market Insight: Gold Attracts Capital Amid Uncertainty

Fluctuating oil prices and a slowdown in investment together suggest some scope for inflationary pressures to moderate in the short term. Considerable uncertainty nevertheless surrounds the longer-term outlook. Gold often draws capital in these circumstances, offering a hedge against inflation, geopolitical risks and currency depreciation.

Friday’s US nonfarm payrolls release is the next focal point for investors. A significantly weaker set of figures could diminish expectations of a December rate rise further and lend fresh impetus to gold’s advance. A strong reading, by contrast, could strengthen the argument for continued Fed tightening, putting downward pressure on gold prices.
