Bitcoin and Gold Outlook: Democrats gain control of Congress as BTC climbs above $80K and XAU regains $4,000

  • Above $80,000, Bitcoin’s advance lifts sentiment across the wider cryptocurrency market.
  • With bulls rebuilding positions above $4,000, Gold gathers pace as bullish sentiment strengthens.
  • A narrow lead over Republicans in the US midterm elections puts Democrats on course to control the House and Senate in January.

Above $80,000, Bitcoin (BTC) has recouped the steep losses following the Binance hack, which affected $6.3 billion, signalling a bullish reversal. Both BTC and Gold (XAU/USD) are gathering pace on Wednesday as buyers return. Following the United States (US) midterm elections, Gold’s rebound above $4,000 could lend further support to bullish sentiment.

Democrats move towards control of Congress with lead over Republicans

January is set to bring Democratic control of the US House and Senate after the party outperformed Republicans in Tuesday’s midterm elections. NBC News reported that Democrats gained seven Senate seats from their opponents, including Iowa, Kansas, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.

With 218 seats required for a majority in the House of Representatives, Democrats are on course to secure 258, the report says. Their run of victories also extended to governorships, with Texas, Nevada, Ohio, Georgia and Iowa changing hands. Among the drivers of the Democrats’ widespread gains were concerns over the economy against a backdrop of high oil and energy prices.

For the cryptocurrency sector, further obstacles could await the CLARITY Act if it is reintroduced, following its earlier failure to pass the Senate.

In emailed commentary, Joel Kruger, Global Market Strategist at LMAX Group, said: “Much of the election outcome was already priced in. Even sizable Democratic majorities are unlikely to yield the votes needed to override a presidential veto, so while political noise may persist, the scope for legislation that materially changes the economic outlook looks limited,”

Prices have nevertheless moved higher in the immediate aftermath: Bitcoin has climbed above $80,000, while Ethereum (ETH) has advanced beyond $2,400. With Gold holding above $4,000, investors appear willing to return to the market. Whether buyers consolidate their control or the current recovery fails will depend heavily on the coming sessions.
Kruger also added: “With election uncertainty fading, we see room for investors to buy the dip in risk assets and trim dollar longs, while Treasury yields drift lower as markets pare expectations for additional Fed hikes beyond December,”

Bitcoin technical analysis: Buyers strengthen their hold as prices rally

At $80,640, Bitcoin retains a positive near-term outlook, supported by its position above the 200-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) at $76,533 and the 100-day EMA at $77,849. Trading just above the 50-day EMA of $80,153 points to demand building around the area of the recent breakout.

At 51, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is broadly neutral, albeit with a slight upward bias. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD), meanwhile, shows a relatively modest negative reading below zero, suggesting that bearish momentum is easing rather than gathering pace.

Daily BTC/USDT chart

The first downside support is the 50-day EMA near $80,153. Below that sit the 100-day EMA at $77,849 and a more substantial structural floor at the 200-day EMA around $76,533. The next upside barrier is the SuperTrend line at $82,920; failure to sustain a break above this level could invite fresh selling.

Gold technical analysis: XAU advances above $4,000

Trading around $4,045 after moving higher, Gold faces improving prospects of a bullish turnaround. Its near-term outlook nevertheless remains bearish despite the short-term advance, with prices still beneath a tight cluster of moving-average and trendline resistance. Above spot Gold sit the 50-day EMA at $4,160, the 100-day EMA at $4,240 and the 200-day EMA at $4,264. The SuperTrend indicator at $4,163 further underlines the potential for selling pressure on rallies.

The momentum picture remains mixed. While the RSI is close to neutral at 47, the MACD has improved but remains in negative territory, indicating that downward pressure is easing rather than confirming a bullish reversal.

Daily XAU/USDT chart

The 50-day EMA at $4,160 and the SuperTrend line at $4,163 provide the nearest resistance cluster, followed by the 100-day EMA at $4,240. Further up, a broader ceiling comprises the 200-day EMA at $4,264 and the descending trendline break level near $4,299. Buyers would need to regain these levels to alter the medium-term outlook. On the downside, the secondary trendline break around $3,947 offers initial support, with former resistance potentially providing a structural floor should the metal’s pullback continue.

FAQs on Bitcoin, altcoins and stablecoins

Designed to function as money, Bitcoin is a virtual currency and the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation. No single person, group or entity can control this payment method, removing the need for third parties to participate in financial transactions.

Any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin is classed as an altcoin. Some, however, also exclude Ethereum, arguing that these two cryptocurrencies are the source of forks. On that basis, Litecoin would be the first altcoin: it was forked from the Bitcoin protocol and is therefore an “improved” version of it.

Backed by reserves of the assets they represent, stablecoins are cryptocurrencies intended to maintain a stable price. Each stablecoin achieves this by pegging its value to a commodity or financial instrument, such as the US dollar (USD), while an algorithm or demand regulates its supply. Their primary purpose is to offer investors a route into and out of cryptocurrency trading and investment. They also provide a means of storing value, given that cryptocurrencies are generally subject to volatility.

Measured as Bitcoin’s market capitalisation divided by the combined market capitalisation of all cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin dominance offers a clear indication of investor interest in Bitcoin. BTC dominance is typically high ahead of and during a bull run, when investors favour relatively stable cryptocurrencies with large market capitalisations, such as Bitcoin. Conversely, falling BTC dominance generally indicates that investors are shifting capital and/or profits into altcoins in pursuit of higher returns, usually triggering a surge in altcoin rallies.
