Apple Launches New MacBook This Week, Targeting Microsoft and Google’s Consumer Market
Apple says the MacBook Neo was built from the ground up, aiming to allow more users to experience Mac laptops at a lower price point.

Apple has introduced the $599 MacBook Neo, marking its most aggressive move yet into the entry-level laptop segment. The launch is clearly aimed at competing with budget Windows PCs and Chromebooks among price-sensitive consumers.

The new model is priced $400 lower than any previous new-generation Apple laptop and significantly below the current $1,099 MacBook Air. MacBook Neo is available in multiple colors, including citrus, silver, indigo, and light pink, as Apple seeks to attract students and a broader mainstream audience.

MacBook Neo features a 13.0-inch display, making it one of Apple’s smallest laptops to date, compared with the 13.6-inch MacBook Air. Notably, it is the first Mac to use the A18 Pro chip originally designed for the iPhone, marking the first time Apple has brought a smartphone processor into its Mac lineup.

The base version comes with 256GB of storage at $599. A $699 upgraded version doubles the storage and adds Touch ID for secure login and payment authentication. Education customers can receive a $100 discount, lowering the entry price to $499. Apple said preorders began this week, with shipments and in-store availability starting March 11.

In terms of performance, MacBook Neo includes 8GB of memory, a 6-core CPU, and a 5-core GPU — specifications comparable to the 2024 iPhone 16 Pro. Despite its entry-level positioning, the device features an aluminum body, a full keyboard and trackpad, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 6, and a 1080P FaceTime camera. It also includes two USB-C ports, a headphone jack, and a 20-watt charger.

MacBook Neo delivers sufficient performance for everyday tasks such as web browsing, document processing, photo editing, and video conferencing. Although powered by an iPhone chip, the device runs the same macOS operating system as other Mac computers and remains compatible with both Mac and iPhone applications.

Compared with low-end Chromebooks and Windows PCs priced between $200 and $600, MacBook Neo remains slightly more expensive. However, Apple emphasizes its premium design, hardware quality, and overall user experience, and claims the device can deliver up to three times the AI processing performance of certain competing PCs.

Market Interpretation:

Apple hopes this more competitively priced Mac will attract new users into its ecosystem, potentially driving additional sales of iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch products. Previously, Apple’s Mac business underperformed during the holiday quarter, with revenue declining 6.7% year over year to $8.39 billion, below analysts’ expectations of over $9 billion.
