ETHUSD definition

ETHUSD is the market symbol for ether (ETH), the native coin of the Ethereum network, priced in US dollars. The quote shows how many US dollars buy one ether, and Ethereum itself is the smart-contract platform on which decentralised applications, tokens, and protocols are built.

Trading ETHUSD means taking a crypto CFD position on the ether price rather than buying the coin or holding it in a wallet. A long position profits if ether rises and a short position profits if it falls. Quotes are in US dollars, the market runs continuously, and price swings can be large from one day to the next.

What moves ETHUSD includes activity across decentralised finance and digital collectibles, network upgrades that change how the chain processes transactions and fees, and the price of Bitcoin, with which ether is strongly correlated. A common point of confusion is the naming: Ethereum is the network, while ether (ETH) is the tradable coin, and the ticker ETHUSD refers to the coin.

ETHUSD Example

Say ETHUSD is trading at 3,000 and you think ether will weaken, so you open a short position on the equivalent of 10 ether. The price falls to 2,800, a move of 200 in your favour per ether, so your profit is:

200 √ó 10 = USD 2,000

If ether had risen to 3,200 instead, the same 200 move per coin against you would have cost USD 2,000.
